Jason Walker

This is the finest page on the internet, ever.
I'm Jason, and this is where I post stories and local items from around Chattanooga that interest me. I hope you find them interesting, and visit often.
I started my radio career at 18 in Cookeville, Tennessee, and joined WDOD-FM in 1997. Along the way I've raised four kids and truly enjoyed being a broadcaster. Now that they're about grown I have nothing to do except hang out on Facebook and look aimlessly at walls. I'm very interested in technology and electronics, and serve as the I.T. coordinator for our group of radio stations. Four years ago I began rebuilding rental properties at the foot of Lookout Mountain, and that takes some of my time.
I'm truly thankful for the opportunity to be a part of your day, so please accept my thanks. Brad Steiner's cell number is 314-7692 if you ever want to call someone and make weird breath noises at 2 AM.

UTC Makes Top 40 of "Sugar Daddy" - seeking schools?

When Daddy can't cover tuition, a growing number of college coeds apparently are seeking the aid of wealthy older men, according to an online dating service that specializes in helping sugar babies meet sugar daddies.
On Monday, SeekingArrangement.com released its list of the 20 fastest growing "sugar baby" schools, starting with Georgia State University, which had 292 sign-ups in 2012.
While no Tennessee schools are in the Top 20, the University of Memphis (No. 28) had 76 sign-ups, a 117 percent increase; followed by University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (No. 33) with 150 percent growth, and UT-Knoxville (No. 50) with an 87 percent increase.
"The average sugar daddy on our website is between 35 and 45 years old. He gives about $3,000 a month to his sugar baby," said spokesman Leroy Velasquez. "Both are engaging in a mutually beneficial relationship."
No Tennessee sugar babies responded to his internal "casting call" to speak to media, but website visitors can see screen after screen of profiles of men and women, including a 19-year-old California woman whose profile is titled: "Treat me like an angel & I'll take you to heaven."
"This is a sophisticating of the criminal misbehavior that goes on in our neighborhoods already," said Deborah Clubb, executive director of the Memphis Area Women's Council. "It makes minor and vulnerable females easy prey with men who take advantage of their inability to take care of themselves."
She suggests men who want to help young women get through college would not look for ways to help by Googling "sugar daddy."
"I cringe at the idea that young women will put themselves at risk supposedly to get money for books and tuition."
U of M student Jeanne Marie Cummings can't imagine it either. "Honestly, I think it's kinda gross. I can't imagine me or any of my friends going to that site for any reason at all. I think it's weird. I've never heard of it, and I don't think any of my friends have."
Sugar babies, according to Velasquez, range in age from 18-56. By far the biggest demographic (44 percent) are college-age women, ages 18-27. They outnumber sugar daddies 12:1.
Each sugar daddy is required to post his income and net worth in his online profile. "Instead of net worth and income, the sugar baby lists how much she is seeking. She can state certain amounts or she can say it is negotiable," Velasquez said.
"There is a range of activity on the website. Some women have one sugar daddy they focus on in a more monogamous relationship. Others may engage in casual encounters. Or their sugar daddy may be located in another state or country, and they may meet once every couple of months for vacations. Or if a man has a business meeting in a certain city, they may attend fundraisers or other events together."
The average sugar daddy makes $250,000 a year, but incomes range from $50,000 to more than $10 million, he Velasquez said. The daddies who get the most hits pay $180 a month for a Diamond membership, which gives them top billing and certifies their income and occupation.
The average relationship, he says, lasts six to nine months.
"We only offer this incentive to college students," said Velasquez, admitting that he hears frequent allegations that the Las Vegas-based site is a thinly veiled escort service.
"In our terms of use, we explicitly say we are against any form of prostitution. We have banned members in the past and continue to ban those who solicit anything. We monitor the postings 24-7 and listen to feedback. All a member has to do is complain. We flag their accounts and automatically ban them."
Tom Henderson, Shelby County assistant district attorney, says prosecution requires proof beyond reasonable doubt that sex is required for payment.
"Based on looking at their website, we can't prove a crime is being committed, but that doesn't mean they are not being investigated or should be. This comes under the heading of bizarre."

In 2010, Rick Scott ran for Governor of Florida. During the campaign, his family "adopted" a rescue Labrador. This became quite a heartwarming element of the campaign, and the Republican nominee took to Facebook to have supporters help "name" the dog. Scott was praised for rescuing this poor dog, and the eventual name chosen was (of course) Reagan.
As Governor-Elect, Rick Scott could be seen walking Reagan all over the place, never missing an opportunity for a photo-op.
Then, after moving to Tallahasee into the Florida Governor's Mansion, Reagan disappeared.
Questions about Reagan's whereabouts were deflected, until now. It was revealed, among other claims, that Reagan barked all the time and a kitchen employee threatened to quit because of the dog.
Is it ever okay to give back an adopted animal? My take is fairly firm that a pet adoption is a one-way ticket, unless the animal is severely misrepresented or there is an absolutely insurmountable circumstance which demands the animal be returned for its own good (or your own good). Other than that, it's yours to keep.

HOW MANY LIVES DOES GANGNAM STYLE HAVE TO RUIN?

A DAD-OF-THREE collapsed and died from a heart attack at his office Christmas party - after dancing to Gangnam Style.Eamonn Kilbride, 46, had been doing the energetic horse-riding style moves to Korean pop sensation Psy's No1 tune with his workmates but seconds later suddenly dropped to the floor. Th tragedy occurred at an office party for the Thwaites brewery, in Blackburn, Lancashire, where Mr Kilbride worked as an IT manager. His wife Julie was with him, celebrating her birthday, at the Whitehall Country Club in Darwen, Lancashire, when he began to complain of chest pains. She desperately tried to revive him with CPR. Paramedics who were on the scene five minutes later also worked on him but he was pronounced dead as he arrived at Royal Blackburn Hospital shortly after 11.30pm on Saturday. The family, who live in Burnley, said the coroner told them that he had suffered from acute heart failure. Mrs Kilbride, paid tribute to a "loving husband" who she had been married to for 23 years. She said: “I want people to know how he would help anybody whether it was a life-long friend, or someone he had just met. “He was a great family man and he worked so hard. “Eamonn was always the life of the party and loved dancing. “We were having a fantastic time at the Christmas party and Eamonn had just finished dancing to Gangnam Style. “He was up on stage and entertaining everybody. “He said he had a bit of a pain and just collapsed. “I tried to revive him until the ambulance got there, but by the time he got to the hospital he was gone.” Mrs Kilbride continued: “Eamonn was such an intelligent man, he inspired our children and made sure they had a good education. “He loved me dearly and would tell people all the time. “I know he thought the world of us.” Mr Kilbride, a keen golfer, had three children, Laurajade, 22, Jack, 21, and Conor, 18, who are all at university. Jack said: “He was a marvellous man and he was really funny. “He always put effort into everything. He just oozed charisma.” Tributes poured in on Facebook for Mr Kilbride, who had worked at Thwaites in Blackburn for 16 years. An initial investigation was launched into Mr Kilbride’s death by police, but officers quickly established no suspicious circumstances. A file has been passed to East Lancashire Coroner Michael Singleton and a post mortem examination was carried out yesterday. Neil Bullows, proprietor at the Whitehall Hotel said: “It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with his family. “It is horrendous and an awful time of year for it to happen.” A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “We got a 999 call at 11.31pm to a man in his 40s. “A rapid response vehicle arrived on scene at 11.37pm and an ambulance at 11.39pm. “The man had a condition which rendered him ill and he was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.” Mr Kilbride’s funeral takes place at 10am on Wednesday, December 19, at St Mary’s RC Church in Yorkshire Street, Burnley. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to British Heart Foundation care of Alderson and Horan in Rossendale Road, Burnley. |
